Tonypandy based Housing Association RHA Wales has appointed Jehu as the main contractor to deliver 51 new affordable homes and 11,000sqft of commercial space in Tonypandy.
The development, known as ‘The Big Shed’ sees the largest investment in the town for decades and will transform the main gateway into the town providing vibrant and active street frontage. Proposals for the site are deliberate, with an aspiration to complement rather than to compete with existing businesses in the town, providing spaces that are presently not available within Tonypandy.
The residential element which is part funded by Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant programme will deliver 51 EPC-A rated apartments for affordable rent, a proportion of which will be managed by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and will provide specialist accommodation for adults with learning disabilities.
The development will achieve high levels of sustainability and energy efficiency, coupled with green and biodiverse external spaces which include green roofs and rooftop gardens and will ensure the project sets the tone in Tonypandy for a greener and brighter future.
Works are starting imminently, with the first few months of activity dedicated to site preparation, enabling demolition, and remediation. The project is programmed to be completed early 2024.
RHA Development & Regeneration Director, Rhianydd Jenkins, says: “We are looking forward to working with Jehu on our Big Shed project. This is a complex site to redevelop, with former mineworking’s, split level site and a mixed-use tenure all in the mix, we are confident that Jehu are the right contractor for the job and looking forward to working together to deliver this flagship scheme’.
‘Jehu are thrilled to be working in partnership once again with RHA Wales. RHA Wales is Jehu’s longest standing Housing Association client and while we’ve delivered many outstanding schemes for RHA Wales, this by far is the biggest and most impressive of all the developments and RHA should be commended for their vision and the design which will make a fantastic addition to Tonypandy. We at Jehu Group are committed to high quality, sustainable development and look forward to working with RHA colleagues and the design team over the duration of the build’ adds Simon Jehu, CEO of Development at Jehu Group.
