Pupils at Ysgol Hendrefelin Taibach Centre get a workout

Pupils at the Ysgol Hendrefelin, Taibach Education Centre in Theodore Road, Port Talbot are over the moon with their new outdoor gym equipment donated by construction and property firm Jehu Group.

Ysgol Hendrefelin is a co-educational residential special school for pupils with a wide range of disabilities and learning difficulties, the students there having additional learning needs.

The school is an amalgamation of Ysgol Hendre Residential Special School, Velindre Community School and the Bryncoch Referral Unit, along with the additional provision of the Theodore Road site in September 2016.

Welsh property and construction firm Jehu Group is currently working in partnership with Coastal Housing Group on the redevelopment of the former Glanafan Comprehensive school,  located in Station Road in the heart of Port Talbot’s town centre.

The £7 million investment is one of a number of projects in Port Talbot’s regeneration programme, which will see over £44million invested in and around the town centre, partly funded by the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) Programme led by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.  The project has also received funding of £3.17million from the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant Programme which includes £284k of Housing Finance Grant.

The new development will provide a total of 47 new homes for rent and will include one and two bedroom apartments plus two and three bedroom houses. In addition to the new homes there will be three new retail units in a new courtyard fronting onto Station Road.

The VVP programme aims to bring about a genuine transformation of the town and, as well as delivering major projects such as the former Port Talbot Police Station housing scheme, the renewal of Aberafan House and the now completed Parkway transport hub, the VVP programme will link with the development at Port Talbot Harbourside, which has the potential for the creation of 2,000 jobs.

Marc Jehu, Managing Director of Construction said: “As part of all our development schemes we implement a Responsible Business plan outlining our commitments to our partners and the wider community in the form of engagement, training and employment.”

The Jehu Group donated more than £4,000 to the Taibach Centre which enabled it to purchase outdoor gym equipment for student use. The donation reflects Jehu’s, NPTCBC and Welsh Governments commitment to contribute to the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the community as part of a wider community benefits scheme.

Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainable Development, Councillor Annette Wingrave said: “The Glanafan School housing project is central to the ongoing, multi-million pound re-development of Port Talbot’s town centre and it is appropriate an educational facility in the town is now in receipt of a community benefits initiative from this important construction scheme.”

Clare Watkins, Targeted Recruitment & Training Manager at Coastal Housing Group said: Coastal are proud to be able to see the completion of this much needed project for the students at Theodore Road and Thank Jehu for their generosity.
