Client name: Rhondda Housing Association
Client overview: Rhondda Housing Association has been providing housing in the area for over 35 years and has invested over £70 million in housing in the Rhondda Cynon Taf area during this time.
Brief description of the scheme: The partial demolition, refurbishment and conversion of the former Victorian primary school, Graig y Wion, into 28 new residential units.
More information: Fifteen apartments have been provided within the two three-storey new builds, three in bungalows, whilst 10 apartments were housed in the old Victorian school building.
The challenging nature of the refurbishment involved extensive liaison with conservation officers and local planners.
Due to the existence of a bat colony within the original Victorian structure, the roof refurbishment involved precise and detailed work under NRW licence, overseen by an ecologist, including hand removal of quantities of individual roof tiles to ensure protection of the identified bat species present.
